How I work

Six principles, shaped by fifteen years of shipping.

Six rules
I work by.

01 - Principle

Beginner's mind.

Learn rules to break them

Every product deserves a fresh look, even the mature ones. I stay close to the beginner mindset that questions assumptions and finds the unobvious path forward.

02 - Principle

Follow your passion

No fear. Make it count.

Fifteen years in and I still chase the problems that pull at me. When the work matters to you, it shows up in every detail - tone, friction, delight, clarity.

03 - Manifesto

"Create new ways. Frameworks travel. Teams, markets, and products don't."

Build the playbook that fits your context, not the one that won last quarter in someone else's war story.

04 - Principle

Do what you can

Get things done

Momentum beats perfection. Ship, measure, refine. The best design leaders I know keep 40 small bets moving, not 3 grand ones stalled at handoff.

05 - Principle

Use what you have.

Don't do it in perfection

Constraints aren't an obstacle - they're the brief. Existing systems, brand assets, and team skills are raw material for the next leap, not blockers to bypass.

06 - Coda

Build with care.

Build with respect for the people who live with your output - users, engineers, the next designer. Good taste is a service, not a signature.

Deep Passion

Three things I go deep on

Building

Discovery to Ship

Founding designer, five ventures of my own. I love the full loop — discovery, design, build, validation, ship. When handoffs slow things down, let's skip them. Design and code are now so close together — you can really focus on going beyond the status quo. That's where the work gets interesting.

Team Building

Leading Distributed Teams

6 years leading distributed teams taught me the framework that makes trust possible: clear ownership, fewer handoffs, people running their own tracks end to end. I stay close enough to coach, far enough to let people own the outcome. Good culture isn't a perk — it's what makes scale possible at any size.

Evidence Building

Building UX Research From Scratch

Going deep on how a business actually works is where I get pulled in. How revenue flows, where the friction lives, what each team really cares about. Empathy for users isn't separate from that — it's what you build on top of understanding the whole product. That's when UX metrics and business metrics start shaping strategy.

Aloha 👋

I'm Stefan Heißenberg.
Fifteen years designing digital products across agencies, consulting, startups, and enterprise. At antwerpes and sunzinet I worked with clients like Bayer, BIONTECH, and OBI. Then I joined Saloodo! as the founding designer — DHL's logistics startup where I first learned to connect UX and business metrics.

From there I designed the initial concept for myDHLi. What started as a concept became the platform I've shaped for six years as Head of Design, reporting to the VP of Product, owning product tracks alongside leading the distributed design team across EMEA.
